da Vinci Testimonial: Terri Shenk
Terri Shenk works with severely disabled children so she’s familiar with what patients experience after surgery. But all Terri’s training and understanding couldn’t prepare her for what to expect when it came time for her first surgery.
“I thought I’d be in pain and unable to get out of bed for weeks,” said Shenk, who underwent a total hysterectomy at 34 years old. Using the da Vinci robotic surgery, local OB/Gyn Dr. Thomas Fromuth performed Terri’s surgery.
Terri’s husband escorted her to the outpatient center at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center.
“Even though the doctor had explained the procedure to me beforehand in his office, it was nice when he arrived before my surgery to talk to both of us. It really eased my husband’s worries.”
Terri had surgery at 9:30am and was recovering at home by 5:00pm. “I was amazed at how little pain there was after surgery,” said Shenk, whose only other source of what to expect was from a friend who underwent a traditional hysterectomy.
“I thought I’d be in bed for days and taking heavy pain medicine.”
Because Terri’s work involves lifting children, Dr. Fromuth recommended she not return to work for two weeks.
When asked how the da Vinci surgery compared to giving birth Terri said, “This was a cakewalk compared to having kids.”
da Vinci Patient Testimonial: Kristina Shertzer
At 48 years old, the last thing a woman wants is for her monthly period to interrupt her daily life. For Kristina Shertzer, an apple-sized fibroid tumor on her uterus was causing bleeding so serious that she couldn’t leave the house for three days a month.
“I had no idea this amount of blood loss was causing a strain on my heart,” said Shertzer, an x-ray technician who, a year prior to her da Vinci robotic surgery by Dr. Sharee Livingston-Anderson at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center, had undergone an ablation to stop the bleeding but failed.
“I couldn’t go on hormones because my sister had a stroke on them so I was out of options until I heard about the da Vinci partial hysterectomy from Dr. Livingston.”
With advice she received from Dr. Livingston and a little support from HysterSisters, an online support group for women who have had or need a hysterectomy, Shertzer was confident the da Vinci surgery could be a success.
“Two weeks after my surgery, I donated a closet full of maxipads to charity,” said Shertzer, who admits the life changing surgery has given her a new life. “I don’t have to plan my life around my period, and my sex life is ten times better!”
da Vinci Patient Testimonial: Heather Johnson
“I am a freelance photographer so my job requires that I be available when a client calls. I can’t afford to be out of work for too long, especially during wedding season,” said Heather Johnson, the mother of three who decided to seek reversal of a tubal ligation in order to have more children.
“I’ve been in situations where other doctors have dismissed my needs in the past,” said Heather Johnson. “When I met with Dr. Kegel, I felt like he really heard me. Like he respected my reasoning and wanted to help.”
Johnson’s request would have been impossible if it hadn’t been for Dr. Daniel Kegel’s experience with da Vinci surgery.
“I was home the next day and shot a wedding the week after my surgery,” said Johnson. “By doing the surgery with Dr. Kegel using the da Vinci approach, I was able to name my surgery date. The quick recovery time of da Vinci let me fit surgery into my schedule.”
Johnson was pregnant with Lucas, her fourth child, within a year of her surgery.
da Vinci Patient Testimonial: Rachael Jones
Newlywed Rachael Jones feared she wouldn’t be able to have children when she learned she needed gynecological surgery. Having once worked in an obstetrics office, she remembered hearing staff talk about Dr. Daniel Kegel and decided to seek his help.
“I understand why people like him so much,” said Jones. “Dr. Kegel has an amazing way of making you feel at ease. I was scared and didn’t know what to expect. After discussing my options, I chose to have the da Vinci robotic surgery because Dr. Kegel said it would give me the best chance of being able to get pregnant after the surgery.”
Rachael had outpatient surgery on a Friday and was back to work on Monday.
“The doctor called me on Saturday to make sure I was ok,” said Jones, who admits she was surprised to hear from the doctor himself and not just a nurse.
“I liked that he called because I was still worried. Dr. Kegel told me during the phone call that there was no damage during surgery and that I could try to get pregnant in a few months.”

For the patient, benefits may include:
• Smaller incisions – provide faster healing and little to no scarring
• Shortened hospital stay, or even outpatient surgery
• Minimal blood loss – less chance a blood transfusion will be needed during surgery
• Less post-surgical pain – minimizes the length of time or need for pain medication
• Faster healing time – you will be back to your normal routine faster
da Vinci® Surgical System
The da Vinci® Surgical System provides your surgeon with tremendous surgical accuracy utilizing high-definition 3D vision and a magnified operating view. Your doctor controls the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body. Though it is often called a “robot,” da Vinci cannot act on its own: The surgery is performed entirely by your doctor.
Together, da Vinci technology allows your doctor to perform complex procedures through just a few tiny openings. As a result patients are often able to get back to their daily routines faster — without the usual recovery for traditional surgeries.
To date, the da Vinci System has been used successfully worldwide in hundreds of thousands of procedures.
